Lafarge posts video of Low Carbon Fuels Project announcement
Lafarge Canada Inc. has posted a video containing highlights of the announcement of the $8 million low carbon fuels project. The special event was held in May at the company’s plant in Bath, Ontario. Featured speakers include Richard Sebastianelli, Bath Cement Plant Manager; Adam Auer, of the Cement Association of Canada; and Richard Adamson, CMC Managing Director.

Genomic Applications Partnership Program (GAPP)
The Genomic Applications Partnership Program (GAPP) represents a key element in Genome Canada’s strategic plan towards funding downstream research and development (R&D) projects that are driven by challenges and opportunities facing users of genomics based technologies. For the purpose of this program, “Users” include the various stakeholders that have an interest in “pulling” technologies and other results of genomics research from academia to market and application, including industry, government, not-for-profits, and other organizations. EOIs accepted on or after July 29, 2013.

Deadline extended for CCEMC Grand Challenge
The CAD$35 million CCEMC Grand Challenge: Innovative Carbon Uses is a global quest to turn carbon emissions into a valuable resource. The Climate Change and Emissions Management (CCEMC) Corporation is seeking innovative ideas from around the world that will create new, carbon-based products and markets.

The deadline to submit a brief, non-confidential proposal has been extended to July 31, 2013. Based on these brief submissions, a select group of participants will be invited to submit a complete and comprehensive proposal in Fall 2013. Up to 20 of those proposals will be selected for CAN$500,000 funding in seed grants. Complete information about the process, schedule, and awards is available at the website.

International Student Energy Summit Live-Streamed
The International Student Energy Summit is taking place over the next three days (June 13-15, 2013) in Trondheim, Norway and will bring 500 students from 64 countries together to learn about and debate global energy challenges and opportunities.
A team of 40 students in Norway have worked tirelessly for the last year to put together an incredibly diverse and impressive program. We will be running a livestream of the entire event so that people all across the globe can tune in.

The Global CCS Institute (GCCSI) is holding a one-day meeting about the role of storage standards and the deployment of carbon capture and storage on June 6 in Calgary.

CCEMC makes $50M available for projects that support clean production and processing
Climate Change and Emissions Management Corporation (CCEMC) is offering up to a total of $50 million in funding for projects that can reduce emissions from fossil fuel production and processing. Initial submissions are due by September 27. This call for proposals is in addition to the Grand Challenge the corporation is currently operating.

University College London seeks academic staff and PDFs for new department

Call for Proposals: Alberta-Finland Innovation and Commercialization Program
Alberta Innovates - Technology Futures is opening the second call for proposals for the Alberta - Finland Innovation and Commercialization Program. The program objective is to accelerate technology development through international collaboration. The $2 million funding program is supported by Alberta Enterprise and Advanced Education through Alberta Innovates - Technology Futures. Matching funding for the Finnish partner is provided through TEKES, Finland’s government-supported innovation organization.

One Day Symposium on Global and Canadian Developments on CCS, May 10th
On May 10th, the PTRC will host a one-day symposium on the latest developments globally in CCS at the Hotel Saskatchewan. It will be open to researchers and industry participants. There is no cost to attend this event, but spaces are limited to 45-50 participants and an RSVP is required. Please contact the PTRC at info@ptrc.ca to register.

July 15 set as date for Grand Challenge first round deadline
The Climate Change and Emissions Management (CCEMC) Corporation is awarding CAD$35 million for innovative ideas from around the world for an open innovation challenge that will create new, carbon-based products and markets.The deadline for the first round of funding is July 15, 2013. From this round, up to 20 submissions will be selected for $500,000 each in grants. Proponents selected in the first round will be invited to present their ideas at a conference next spring where they will receive access to an ‘ecosystem’ of support – including exposure to venture capital organizations, business leaders and corporations who may be interested in their technology.

Application deadline nears for Groningen summer school
March 31, 2013 marks the last day for applications to the June summer school held at the University of Groningen in the Netherlands. This 12-day program is focused on a multi-disciplinary approach to energy transition, from policy to physics and is based on a case study of Russia.

Call for Abstracts for CMTC 2013
The 2013 Carbon Management Technology Conference (CMTC) conference will draw professionals from all engineering disciplines to share their expertise and provide their perspectives on the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and adaptation to changing climate. This year’s conference is in Alexandria, VA between October 21 and 23. The conference will focus on engineering perspectives regarding key issues, including technologies, strategies, policies, management systems and metrics. Abstracts accepted until April 15, 2013

Mitacs-Accelerate has issued a Call for Proposals for Phd students enrolled in a university in British Columbia. The application deadline is March 27, 2012.

Sustainable Earth Sciences 2013
This conference will bring together multi-disciplinary scientists working on different aspects of Sustainable Earth Science. The main conference themes will be CO2 Storage, Geothermal Energy and Deep-Earth Storage. Cross-disciplinary session themes will be encouraged, including monitoring technology, coupled Earth systems modelling, long-term storage integrity, combining renewables, geothermal and CCS, and risk and environmental impact analysis.

Sushanta Mitra plays lead role on Canada-India collaboration
The University of Alberta is taking a lead role in a Canada-India research collaboration to develop new technologies to ensure health, safety and sustainability for remote and rural communities in both countries. Sushanta Mitra, CMC researcher, mechanical engineering professor and assistant vice-president of research, is the U of A’s lead on the project.

CMC researcher: growing demand requires multiple energy sources
Dr. Nader Mahinpey, CMC researcher and chemical engineering professor in the U of C’s Schulich School of Engineering, tells a Winnipeg Free Press reporter although fossil fuels will remain an important source of energy for the foreseeable future, renewables will play an increasingly important role.

Don Lawton to speak about New Zealand earthquake work
Don Lawton, University of Calgary Geophysicist, will speak about the seismic work he did in New Zealand after the 2010 earthquake near Christchurch, NZ. His talk is part of the 2013 Canadian Society of Exploration Geophysicists Distinguished Lecture Tour which will see him speak in 20 cities in Canada and the U.S. The talk is on Nov. 2 at 4 p.m. in ES162, University of Calgary.
